One of the organisations I'm proudest of being associated with from the very beginning is the European Council on Foreign Relations. In this podcast, Ivan Krastev, Mark Leonard, Mabel van Oranje and I reflect on the first 15 years since ECFR’s formal launch in Berlin on 9 November 2007 - the 18th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall. (We actually date ECFR’s inception back to a dinner in Mabel’s kitchen in London in December 2006. Hence the frequent references to Mabel’s kitchen table.)
How optimistic we were then! What a different, difficult world we face now – one in which there's a major land war in Europe, non-Western great and middle powers are increasingly calling the shots and both our values and our interests are threatened on all sides. Cause enough for intellectual pessimism – but also optimism of the will...
