There are sooooo many things wrong with this post and so many bad assumptions, it would take four times the work just to provide counter-arguments. This is in general the case with bullshit, it fouls things and then the effort to clean it is an order of magnitude greater.

"To be clear: this is still avoidable. Suppose the roughly four-fifths of Ukrainian territory still controlled by Kyiv gets military commitments from the west strong enough to deter any further Russian advances, secure large-scale investment in economic reconstruction, encourage Ukrainians to return from abroad to rebuild their country, and allow for stable, pro-European politics and reform. In five years, the country joins the EU, and then, under a new US administration, starts the process of entering Nato. Most of Ukraine becomes a sovereign, independent, free country, firmly anchored in the west."

Ukraine was an independent, sovereign and free country prior to 2014. The secret: it swore neutrality towards Russia and Bielarus (it was something all three agreed towards eachother) in 1991 and it kept it that way until 2014, when it became de facto anti-Russian and in 2019 became de jure anti Russian, abolishing the neutrality from Constitution and swearing to join NATO. And no, NATO is not a defense alliance, facts on the ground speak to the contrary.

The military commitments of Europe would necessarily involve spilling blood on the Russian steppe. Would Timothy go there to done a uniform and be the target of FAB 500 or all sorts of drones? Nah, I don't think so.

Most of the reconstruction of the areas devastated by this war will be in the Russian side, so Ukrainians will be spared of enourmous costs. However, the complain is that Ukrainians from Ukraine are slithering their way in the rebuild Mariupol and are also moving in Pokrovsk, looking for Russians to take it.

Timothy should update his information about the Romanian elections. The Tiktok addvertisment was bought by the Liberal party hoping to undercut what was considered the main candidate, from PSD. Presently legal proceedings have started against all this legal coup given that the evidence totally exculpates the Russians and their "puppet" Georgescu, and implicates the corrup Romanian politicians, including the expired president.

Nuclear proliferation has been encouraged by the beserker actions of the US for the past 35 years. As for Ukraine getting nuclear weapons, Russian officials have assured the world that ANY necessary means will be used to stop Ukraine having nuclear weapons. I guess what is good for the goose (Israel and US bleating and terrorizing towards Iran) is good for the gander. But in this case Russia has greater chances to stop Ukraine having nukes with delivery systems, than Israel/US have against Iran.

Also, now, more than 50% of Ukrainians want peace now.

Please tell us more about territorial conquests. Let's look at Israel's actions for instance. Not only taking more territory, but also conducting ethnic cleansing and genocide. All with US and German ammunition. Rules based order my ass. Hypocrite!

Thank you for thinking the unthinkable. As some nobody here in Canada, I feel like a person in a nightmare, seeing what's coming, but unable to make a move to stop it. My worry is that Putin is playing the fools in the coming US administration. They show signs of having bought into his scheme for a new world order. I even feel the temptation to bury my head, carry on, and try to stop caring. But for whatever reason, I can't. All that is good - mercy, compassion, love, the sanctity of our fragile bonds - depends on Putin's defeat. I cannot bear to think of any other outcome. Too much is at stake. So I continue raging, reading, writing, and - as always hoping - from the sidelines.

You seemed to be one of the individuals that believed that Oped in a national paper, written by a retired general, that Canada is about to be attacked by Russia, with boots on the ground, over the Arctic Ocean and all the wasteland in the NW Territories. The reddit has exploded with laughter (all Russophobes, Russophiles are banned) at the idea.

As for "All that is good - mercy, compassion, love, the sanctity of our fragile bonds", have you watched what is happening in Gaza? Do you know that your government has submitted to ICJ a closed envelope arguing for the legality of Israeli occupation of Gaza and West Bank and all that is happening there. We don't know what the Canadian argument was, because they were too cowards to make it public, like all the other representatives arguing against (the vast majority) or pro Israel (Hungary had more balls for instance).

But Russia cannot win. Because Ukrainians will not lose. They've suffered and fought for their freedom for a long time. Theirs is a righteous cause. It feeds and nourishes the soul of the nation. Russia, on the other hand, is sick. In the grip of their pathological Putin, their willingness to accept his lies depends on how long their fear of doing nothing is greater than the cost of doing nothing.

You are wrong. Instead of continuing to beat the war drums , we need more statesmen in the mold of Eisenhower and Nehru. They were not afraid to take the initiative to freeze the unjust conflicts they were part of (Korea and Kashmir, respectively).

Now that the American voters by reelecting Trump have proven that the US nuclear umbrella and security guarantees mean nothing I really do believe that with our wealth, resources and scientific expertise that Australia, a country without the population size to defend itself from a Chinese attack should strongly consider building our own nuclear deterrent

I’m sorry but your argument/proposal seems to me to be effectively only an attempt to save face. It tries to claim a win on the basis of saying to Russia “no more” when the ultimate disgrace of the West and victory for Russia is in allowing Russia any of Ukraine at all. The west needs to realize that we are replaying the 1930s, making the same mistakes, and likely with the same outcome - more war, not less. It is noteworthy to me that Britain entered WW2 to stop the dismemberment of Poland by Germany (and Russia) with the ultimate result of the war being complete Russian control of Poland. Talk about being outplayed! Anyway, just looking at current western society and it’s “leaders” (and I am including ALL of them) I see no chance the steady erosion of the democratic, moral fibre of the west by Russia, China and the internal left will not continue regardless of what happens in Ukraine.

I like that picture of an „Europe of the willing“. I would argue, though, that much like old man trying to make love „willing“ is no substitute for „able“. One thing I can say for sure: Germany will not take any lead whatsoever. The days of German militarism (however benign its friends may judge it) are over forever.
