History of the Present (fortnight ending 12 August 2023)

I'm on holiday for a couple of weeks, so this isn't a proper bulletin. We got to the US a fortnight ago, just in time for publication of the big indictment of Donald Trump (superbly annotated by the New York Times here) for trying to rig the 2020 election result. I've also been following crucial upcoming elections in Poland, now set for 15 October, and in Slovakia this September. More of all that in future newsletters.
Meanwhile, I recently completed the online photo gallery for my book Homelands. Take a look –it's best read in conjunction with the book.

Greetings! I'd finished reading Homelands on the weekend. Read it in less than a week. I'd also found your photos which expanded the world's and people you lived with, experienced and everything in-between, a world that criss-crossed over some of my own and more so that of my parents and their parents and so on. These worlds I shared briefly, you and I, in the mid-1990s when our paths crossed. Oh, the last chapter, which you described enjoyed writing the most, was the most immersive and eye-opening for me. Oh, I read Free Speech a year or so ago. It's now on my student's reading list. Thank you for all you do.
Total nostalgia - I spent much time behind the Iron Curtain at the same time. Fabulous!
